Conference action gets underway
Conference tournament action got underway Tuesday, with more conferences scheduled to begin play Wednesday.
Here is a rundown of early conference tournament action:
Big East
Top-seeded St. John's was an early upset victim, as eighth-seeded Villanova pounded the Johnnies 12-0 in a game called after seven innings. South Florida was also an upset winner, as the sixth-seeded Bulls upended No.3 Notre Dame 9-3. Fourth-seeded Louisville beat Seton Hall 12-3 and No. 2 Cincinnati got past West Virginia 11-5 in the first day of double-elimination play.
Big South
UNC Asheville beat High Point 3-2 in 10 innings to move on into the double-elimination bracket against top-seeded Coastal Carolina. In the other play-in game, Radford beat Charleston Southern 6-1 to earn a date with No. 2 Liberty.
Horizon League
Valparaiso beat Butler 6-5 in the play-in game for this six-team double-elimination tournament.
Mountain West
Nevada-Las Vegas upset third-seeded San Diego State 6-2 and Utah got past BYU 9-3 in the first day of the Mountain West Conference tournament. The Rebels advanced to take on top-seeded TCU while Utah will battle New Mexico.
Southern Conference
Western Carolina got past Davidson 11-10 and Wofford beat Citadel 8-4 in the play-in games in this conference tournament. Western Carolina will take on No. 2 seed College of Charleston while Wofford meets top-seeded Elon.
